Marine Conservation: What can we do to help?

Updated: Feb 9, 2024

WHAT IS MARINE CONSERVATION?

Marine conservation AKA Ocean conservation known as the protection and preservation of ecosystems in oceans. Some types of marine ecosystems include intertidal zones, kelp forests, mangrove forests, coral reefs, and the deep sea ocean.

WHAT IS MARINE POLLUTION?

Marine pollution is a mix of chemicals and trash, most of which comes from land sources like litter and is washed or blown into the ocean like untreated sewage. The litter and sewage contaminate the waters and pollute them causing harm to marine ecosystems and marine wildlife. This pollution results in damage to the environment, and to the health of all organisms including the seafood we consume.

Imagine yourself breathing in tons and tons of chemicals, choked by plastic bottles, and consuming a handful of microplastics a day.

WHAT CAN WE DO?

As students, we are still learning new things every day.

Simply by reading this blog, you are already taking a step to help and support marine conservation efforts.

  • Conserving water and limiting water usage play a part in helping too! using less water during showers, turning off the faucet to soap your hands, and using the half flush function in toilets if available, reduces the amount of wastewater.

  • Taking part in beach clean-ups helps as well! Although some may find it boring, you are reducing the amount of plastic and pollution that’s on our beaches and making our beaches cleaner!

  • Finding sustainable and responsible tourist companies that not only educate you about marine life and the ecosystems with it but also ensure that we respect and practice safe distancing from wildlife.

There are plenty of other blogs and resources for you to read, here are some of my personal favorites!

See you on the next one!
